ADA-Compliant Parking Striping

Accessible Parking Layout & Compliance – Iowa City, Coralville & Johnson County

Parking lots that serve the public must meet the requirements of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. When parking lots are restriped or layouts are updated, property owners must provide properly marked accessible parking spaces, van-accessible spaces, access aisles, and signage.

RedLine Striping Co. provides ADA-compliant parking lot striping and compliance updates throughout Iowa City, Coralville, Kalona, Washington, and the surrounding Johnson County area. We evaluate existing parking layouts and restripe stalls, access aisles, and pavement stenciling so your lot meets federal accessibility requirements.

Many parking lots fall out of compliance and can face citations, fines, and complaints due to faded striping, missing signage, or incorrect layouts. In many cases, re-striping and proper signage installation are enough to restore ADA compliance.

Most property owners don’t have time to sort through ADA regulations—and with us, you don't have to. RedLine Striping Co. regularly paints and updates accessible parking according to the 2010 ADA Standards, ensuring all aspects are in compliance. When you hire us, you can trust that your accessible parking will be laid out marked according to state and federal regulations. The requirements are outlined below.

ADA Handicap Parking Space Requirements

The ADA requires a minimum number of accessible parking spaces based on the total number of spaces in each parking facility. This calculation is made per parking lot, not across an entire property. Federal requirements require a minimum of 1 accessible space per 25 total spaces with at least one van-accessible space.

Accessible parking spaces must be:
  • Minimum 96 inches wide
  • Clearly marked to define the stall
  • Located on the shortest accessible route to the building entrance
  • Installed on surfaces with maximum slope of 1:48

Van-Accessible Parking Requirements

Every parking facility must include at least one van-accessible space, and at least one out of every six accessible parking spaces must be van-accessible. Van spaces may be configured as:
  • 132-inch stall with a 60-inch access aisle, or
  • 96-inch stall with a 96-inch access aisle
Van-accessible spaces must also include “Van Accessible” signage and adequate clearance in parking structures.

Access Aisles and Pavement Markings

Accessible parking spaces must include an access aisle that allows wheelchair users to enter and exit vehicles safely. Access aisles must:
  • Be at least 60 inches wide
  • Extend the full length of the stall
  • Be clearly marked to discourage parking
  • Connect to an accessible route to the building entrance
Two accessible spaces may share one access aisle when installed side-by-side. RedLine Striping Co. installs clearly marked access aisles using cross-hatch stenciling and no-parking markings for visibility and compliance.

RedLine Striping Co. also recommends and installs the International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA) wheel chair symbol stenciling on the pavement. This helps make accessible spaces immediately recognizable to drivers, keeps parking layouts uniform, and improves visibility when signage may be obstructed by vehicles or weather conditions.

ADA Signage Requirements

Each accessible parking space must have upright signage displaying the International Symbol of Accessibility. Signage must:
  • Be mounted with the bottom of the sign at least 60 inches above the ground
  • Remain visible even when a vehicle is parked
  • Identify van-accessible spaces with additional signage

ADA Parking Compliance Inspections & Re-Striping

Parking lots often become non-compliant as striping fades or layouts change. During a restriping project, accessible spaces are commonly updated at the same time. RedLine Striping Co. can:
  • Evaluate your parking lot layout
  • Determine the required number of accessible spaces
  • Install compliant accessible stalls and access aisles
  • Add required stenciling and signage
Our goal is to ensure your lot is clearly marked, accessible, and compliant with ADA standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do small businesses in Iowa City need ADA parking spaces?
Yes. If a business provides parking for customers or visitors, the parking facility must include accessible parking spaces that meet ADA requirements. The number of spaces depends on the total number of parking spaces in the lot. Even small parking lots with as few as one to twenty-five spaces must provide one accessible space.

Can faded handicap parking markings cause ADA compliance issues?
Yes. If accessible parking spaces, access aisles, or pavement markings become difficult to see, the parking lot may no longer clearly identify accessible parking. Re-striping accessible spaces and access aisles helps maintain clear accessibility markings and proper parking lot organization.

How many ADA parking spaces are required in a parking lot?
The number of accessible parking spaces required depends on the total number of parking spaces in the parking facility. For example, a parking lot with 1–25 spaces must provide one accessible parking space, while a lot with 26–50 spaces must provide two. Larger parking facilities must provide additional accessible spaces according to the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
